The US May Impose Sanctions on 200 Chinese Companies This Week
The Biden administration is set to announce new export restrictions targeting China later this week, according to a statement by the US Chamber of Commerce released Thursday, Reuters reports.
The new regulations could place up to 200 Chinese chip manufacturers on the US trade restrictions list, effectively barring most American suppliers from shipping goods to these targeted companies. This information was outlined in a letter from the influential Washington lobbying group obtained by Reuters on Friday.
According to the letter, the Commerce Department, which oversees US export policy, plans to publish these new regulations “before Thanksgiving,” celebrated on November 28.
Neither the US Chamber of Commerce nor the Commerce Department responded to requests for comment.
These plans highlight the Biden administration’s continued commitment to restricting China’s access to semiconductor technologies, even as Republican President-elect Donald Trump is set to begin his second term in January.
Another round of regulations limiting shipments of high-performance microchips to China is also expected next month as part of a broader set of measures, the letter indicated.
Biden has implemented a series of export controls targeting China, aiming to slow its technological advancement over concerns that such technology could enhance Chinese military capabilities.
Sources familiar with the matter said the first wave of regulations would likely include restrictions on exporting chip-making equipment to China.
Reuters previously reported in July that the US planned to unveil a new set of export controls targeting China, including adding approximately 120 Chinese organizations to the restricted trade list.
