Elon Musk Calls for German Chancellor’s Resignation After Magdeburg Attack
Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, has called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to resign following a deadly vehicle attack at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg. Musk made his comments via social media, labeling Scholz an “incompetent fool.”
The incident involved a vehicle plowing into a crowd at a crowded Christmas market, reportedly resulting in at least one fatality and dozens of injuries, according to local media. News agencies have confirmed the driver is in custody, with estimates indicating between 60 and 80 people were injured.
Local hospitals are preparing for a large influx of casualties, according to a city spokesperson. Initial assessments by city officials suggest the attack was deliberate. Authorities have cordoned off the surrounding area due to concerns that explosives may be present in the suspect’s vehicle.
City spokesperson Michael Reif described the scene as “horrific” and confirmed numerous injuries, stating his belief that the attack was intentional. Reif added, “According to my information, the vehicle drove into visitors at the Christmas market, but I can’t yet confirm from which direction or how far it traveled.”
Responding to the incident, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the news suggested “something terrible,” expressing his thoughts with “the victims and their families.” The state premier of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, described the event as “horrifying” and was en route to the scene as of the latest updates.
Local police confirmed they are conducting “major operations” and have closed the market. The official Instagram account of Weihnachtsmarkt Magdeburg advised people to leave the area and allow emergency services to perform their duties.
Last month, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated there were no specific threats to Christmas markets this year, though she urged continued vigilance. The Magdeburg attack has drawn comparisons to the tragic incident on December 19, 2016, when an Islamist extremist drove a truck into crowds at a Berlin Christmas market, killing 13 and injuring many more.
