US stocks closed lower, Dow Jones down 1.15%

The US stock market ended Thursday trading lower amid negative dynamics from the telecommunications, utilities and finance sectors.

At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones fell 1.15%, the S&P 500 fell 1.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite fell 0.68%.

Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was the top performer among the components of the Dow Jones index today, up 2.89 points or 1.82% to close at 161.42. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) rose 0.43 points or 0.24% to close at 178.81. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) rose 0.54 points or 0.19% to close at 290.39.

The biggest losers were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which shed 4.05 points or 3.52% to end the session at 111.12. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 2.79% or 3.51 points to close at 122.23, while Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was down 0.91 points ( 2.74%) and finished trading at 32.25.

The leading performers in the S&P 500 index today were DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM), which rose 4.53% to 95.21, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA), which gained 4.15%, to close at 42.20, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY), which rose 4.07% to close at 70.50.

The biggest losers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL), which shed 6.19% to close at 6.97. Shares of SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) shed 5.96% to end the session at 220.27. Shares of Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) fell 5.59% to 168.69.

Leading gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite in today’s trading were Green Giant Inc (NASDAQ:GGE), which rose 168.57% to 1.88, Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV), which gained 95. 45% to close at 24.49, and InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV), which rose 83.03% to close at 7.98.

Shares of Jowell Global Ltd became the leaders of the fall. (NASDAQ:JWEL), which shed 45.36% to close at 1.53. Shares of Cyclerion Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CYCN) shed 37.57% to end the session at 0.59. Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) dropped 35.22% to 6.40.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that fell in price (2114) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (997), while quotes of 125 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 2,093 stocks fell, 1,655 rose, and 252 remained at the previous close.

Shares in Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) fell to a 52-week low, falling 5.59% or 9.99 points to close at 168.69.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, rose 6.90% to 30.52.

Gold futures for December delivery added 0.07%, or 1.20, to $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for November delivery rose 1.30%, or 1.14, to $88.90 a barrel. Futures for Brent crude for December delivery rose 1.57%, or 1.47, to $94.84 a barrel.

Meanwhile, on the Forex market, EUR/USD fell 0.87% to 0.98, while USD/JPY edged up 0.35% to hit 145.13.

Futures on the USD index rose 1.03% to 112.15.
